Marco Reus suffers ankle ligament tear

The first half of the Bundesliga season is over for Germany international Marco Reus. The 25-year-old suffered a lateral ligament tear in his ankle during Borussia Dortmund’s 2-2 draw with SC Paderborn on Saturday and is out for the remainder of the year. BVB revealed the news early on Sunday afternoon. Reus, who was subbed off in the 67th minute, is expected to be able to return to training at the start of January.

Reus, who scored in the game to put his side 2-0 up, was caught on his right ankle following a strong tackle by Marvin Bakalorz and had to be carried from the pitch on a stretcher. Reus suffered a syndesmosis tear in his left ankle at the end of last season and missed the World Cup as a result. He also picked up a ligament and tendon injury in his left ankle in the 1-0 win over his former club Borussia Mönchengladbach on matchday 11 and had to miss Germany’s international wins against Gibraltar (4-0) and Spain (1-0) as a result.

Bakalorz has apologised for the tackle. “We once shared a room at a BVB training camp – I would never purposefully hurt Marco,” said the Paderborn midfielder. “I wanted to win the ball, but I made contact with him. I was an over the top challenge. I’m very sorry.”
