Löw: "Unbelievably proud of the team"

World Champions Germany have won the Confederations Cup for the first time after beating Chile 1-0. "They will remember this day for the rest of their lives," said Germany manager Joachim Löw. DFB.de got reaction post-match from Löw and several players.

DFB PRESIDENT REINHARD GRINDEL: “Congratulations on another fantastic achievement. Now we must start looking forward, because we want to become World Champions again. That’s our main goal. Joachim Löw has the chance to build a strong squad, a mix of experienced players and young talents. We have a big pool of players to choose from.”

JOACHIM LÖW: I’m immensely happy. This is a great feeling. I’m unbelievably proud of the team. We’ve had several disappointments and difficulties this season but we’ve now produced three and a half weeks of fantastic performances. We fought for every metre today and covered more ground than in our last few games. We were certainly a bit nervous at the start, but that’s to be expected with a young team. In the second half, the game was quite physical and hectic. Chile didn’t give us any time or space and they kept pressing but we were fully engaged and switched on. There was something magical about this final as for many of the players, it was their first. They will remember this day for the rest of their lives.

Every player who was here is now in a better position than before the Confed Cup. We achieved our aim – not only winning the title – but helping each player develop. Defending our World Cup title will be much more difficult but we have real strength in depth in Germany.

JULIAN DRAXLER: Every title is special. We had never played together before so it’s even more impressive that we won the tournament. We wanted to win and prove ourselves – we succeeded in doing just that.

SEBASTIAN RUDY: This is such a cool feeling. I think we deserved to win. We’ve been strong throughout the tournament and performed well as a unit. Chile put us under a lot of pressure and kept pushing us back so we tried to counterattack. All of the players here have put themselves in contention for selection for next summer. There is a long, hard season between now and then though.

TIMO WERNER: That was a hard-fought victory. In the second half, we dug deep and there wasn’t really much flowing football on show. We are pleased that our performance was enough in the end. We showed again exactly what this young team is capable of.

JOSHUA KIMMICH: Before the tournament, nobody would have expected us to win. We’ve surprised everyone, we’ve beaten all the continental champions and come out on top against Chile for a second time. We have grown from one game to the next, have come together and put in a fantastic performance in the semi-final. We weren’t perfect tonight, but we battled hard.

CLAUDIO BRAVO (CHILE GOALKEEPER): “Of course we are very disappointed, we wanted to win the title. We lost to one of the best teams in the world.”

JUAN ANTONIO PIZZI (CHILE HEAD COACH): “We played incredibly well in the final and really gave it our all. It took us a while to implement our game plan, but sometimes things don’t turn out the way you plan in football. We are satisfied though, because now we know that we can compete on a level with one of the best teams in the world.”

DFL PRESIDENT DR. REINHARD RAUBALL: “Winning the Confederations Cup title straight after winning the European under-21 Championship is an incredible achievement for German football. Congratulations to head coach Joachim Löw and his team. It is an incredible experience for all those involved.”

DFL MANAGING DIRECTOR CHRISTIAN SEIFERT: “Congratulations to Joachim Löw and his team on this incredible achievement. It’s been a great weekend for German football, winning both the Confederations Cup and the European under-21 Championship. With so many young talents, the future of German football is looking positive.”
