Löw: “Four goals aren’t enough”

Germany secured their second win in qualifying for EURO 2016 in France on Friday night. The World Champions beat minnows Gibraltar 4-0 in Nürnberg’s Grundig-Stadion. DFB.de gathered the match reaction.

Manager Joachim Löw: I’m anything but happy. The team didn’t meet the expectations or the requirements. If we want to play like World Champions, then four goals aren’t enough. We wanted to continuously occupy the final third, but that wasn’t what happened, particularly in the second half. It’s always important to stay wide and stretch games like these. We went central too often. We wanted to produce some quick interplay and combinations, but we didn’t do that. The match against Spain will certainly ask different things of us compared to tonight against Gibraltar. We obviously want to have a positive end to the World Cup winning year.

Mario Götze: We always have high aspirations, especially against Gibraltar. We had hoped to score more goals, but they made things very tight and it’s not always easy when there are eleven players in the box. It could easily have ended 8-0, but this time it didn’t.

Manuel Neuer: We always want to give our best. But it’s difficult when they’ve got an entire team bus at the back. You practically have to try and break in the windows first.

Allen Bula, Gibraltar manager: It’s a great result for us and one we needed to get going. Losing only 4-0 against the World Champions is very good for us. We had a solid defence and knew what Germany would try and do. We may be the smallest nation in UEFA, but we showcased ourselves very well tonight.
