Leverkusen looking for a new head coach

Roger Schmidt is no longer in charge of Bayer 04 Leverkusen. The club announced his departure on Sunday. The Werkself were beaten 6-2 in Dortmund on Saturday, meaning they have lost three competitive games on the spin, conceding 12 goals in the process. The 49-year-old initially took the job in 2014.

The club have struggled to reach expectations domestically this season and it looks like they will be knocked out of the Champions League imminently, as they lost the first leg of their last 16 tie 4-2 at home to Atletico Madrid.

Schmidt’s contract was due to expire in 2019. Sporting director Rudi Völler and chairman Michael Schade had consistently publicised their faith in Schmidt in recent weeks, however, recent results have resulted in a managerial change.

Schmidt is the ninth Bundesliga head coach to leave his position over the course of the 2016/17 season.
