Leno is the hero in 3-1 win over Hertha

Bayer Leverkusen got off to a great start in 2017 against Hertha BSC, claiming a 3-1 victory in Leverkusen on Bundesliga matchday 17. This victory revitalises Leverkusen ambitions to play European football next season.

Hertha meanwhile missed out on their best ever first half of the season. Last season, Pal Dardai’s men had spent Christmas in third place, but fell apart in the second half of the campaign and missed out on the international competitions.

Leno makes world-class saves in second half

Leverkusen took the lead with their first opportunity, as centre back Ömer Toprak converted from close range after 12 minutes. They doubled their lead in the 36th minute, when Hakan Calhanoglu was on target from the penalty spot after Leverkusen had missed their previous four penalties this season. Valentin Stocker pulled one back for Hertha just before of half-time.

Hertha skipper Vedad Ibisevic forced Germany international Bernd Leno to a world-class save in the 72nd minute, before Calhanoglu added a second goal to his tally to secure the victory for Bayer Leverkusen.
