Klose’s emotional farewell

World Cup winner Miroslav Klose played his final game for Lazio this evening, five years after moving to the Rome club. His side lost 4-2 to Fiorentina on the final weekend of the Serie A season; however, that wasn’t the real story. The 37-year-old bid an emotional farewell to the side. During the game he converted a penalty, meaning he ends his stint in Italy having scored 64 goals in 171 competitive appearances.

Ahead of the game the large screen in the Stadio Olimpico displayed Klose’s best goals for the club and supporters held placards emblazoned with the message “King Miro” aloft. His teammates got in on the act too by wearing a special kit, which featured the message “Thanks Miro.” Klose, who captained the side, will disclose his future plans in the coming days.

Klose: "It was a real honour"

“It was a real honour to wear this shirt. I’ll never forget my five years here,” explained the World Cup’s record goal scorer. His head coach, Simone Inzaghi, labelled him as an excellent “player and person.” Striker Stefano Mauri added that “Miro had a great impact on the team. He is an excellent role mode.”

Unfortunately, Lazio were beaten in Klose’s final match. They took the lead after just two minutes through Senad Lulic but goal from Matias Vecino (31’, 71’), Federico Bernardeschi (40’) and Cristian Tello (45’) turned the game around. However, the striker wrapped up the scoring with 16 minutes left on the clock.
