Khedira out for two months – Löw laments a "cruel setback"

Sami Khedira will be sidelined from action with his new club Juventus for around two months. The World Cup winner suffered a torn hamstring in the first half of the Italian side’s friendly with Olympique Marseille on Saturday. Juventus today revealed the extent of the midfielder’s injury.

Khedira, who transferred to the Italian champions from Real Madrid this summer, will not only miss the Italian Super Cup against Lazio next week, but also the start of the Italian side’s defence of their Serie A title on 22nd August. Even worse for DFB fans, the 28-year-old won’t be available for Germany’s European Championship qualifiers against league leaders Poland (4th September) in Frankfurt am Main and Scotland (7th September) in Glasgow.

Germany national Joachim Löw lamented the loss of the midfielder. "I feel for Sami, this most recent setback is particularly cruel for him," said the boss to DFB.de. "He had made a good start at Juventus and he was burning with anticipation ahead of the new season. We were also planning on giving him a big role in our European qualifiers next month, but I’m convinced that despite this setback we’ll still be successful against Poland and Scotland. We’ll have to manage without Sami for quite some time – I’m still optimistic that he’ll make a quick recovery. Sami is a fighter, he’s strong-willed, he’s disciplined, hard-working and he’s mentally strong. I’m sure that he’ll overcome his situation."
