Jones calls up Schlüter and Knaak for Canada match

Turid Knaak (Bayer 04 Leverkusen) and Carina Schlüter (SC Sand) have been called up to the Germany Women’s team by head coach Steffi Jones for the match against Canada on 9th April (15:00 CEST). Midfielder Knaak is back in the Germany squad after injury, but Carina Schlüter has been called up for the first time. Johanna Elsig of 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam and Carolin Simon of SC Freiburg are also included. Jones said, “Carina Schlüter has put in some good performances for the U20 women and for her club and Turid, Johanna and Carolin have also been playing consistently well in the Bundesliga.

Jones will have to make do without Verena Faißt (FC Bayern München) and Lena Goeßling and Simone Laudehr through injury. In addition, Melanie Leupolz (FC Bayern München), Svenja Huth and Tabea Kemme (both 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam) who are all coming back from injury. Alexandra Popp (VfL Wolfsburg) and Lina Magull (SC Freiburg) are being rested.

Jones: "Test at a high level"

Jones explained, “We have a squad with good quality and an attacking threat. Therefore, it’s important that we give enough players game time so that they are all familiar with our philosophy and then we can start to fine-tune.”

The match against Canada is the first home game for Germany since the high-class SheBelieves Cup in the USA and offers good preparation for the European Championship in the Netherlands later this year. “For us it’s another good opportunity to ourselves at a high level,“ said Jones. “We also want to use this opportunity to work intensely on our defence. The Canada team presses very well, likes to battle for possession and is athletic. They’re similar to England and therefore a very strong opponent.” Tickets for the match are available on tickets.dfb.de.

Lena Lotzen gets another chance

Lena Lotzen (FC Bayern München) has been given the chance to prove her fitness in an extended Germany squad after two years out through injury. The attacking players has got herself back in the starting XI at Bayern in the Allianz Women’s Bundesliga. “I’m pleased that Lena is doing well again. We want to show her that she’s still in our plans, but at the same time, we don’t want to overwork her while she is still regaining full fitness.”

Germany are first in action in the group stage of EURO 2017 against Sweden in Breda (17th July), then they play Italy in Tilburg (21st July) and Russia in Utrecht (25th July).
