Höwedes on the scoresheet as Schalke beat Leverkusen 4-1

FC Schalke 04 stormed to an excellent 4-1 win away against Bayer 04 Leverkusen on Friday evening, leaving the home side with something of an inquest. The Royal Blues took an early lead through Guido Burgstaller after six minutes, with Germany international providing the assist. Schalke added to their tally within minutes when world champion Benedikt Höwedes rose highest in the box to send Alessandro Schöpf’s corner into the top corner.

Schöpf was on the scoresheet himself just six minutes later, knocking home Goretzka’s rebounded effort. Burgstaller added his second and Schalke’s fourth shortly after the break, with Leverkusen’s consolation coming in the form of Stefan Kießling’s 69th minute header.

The result had a big impact on the Bundesliga standings of both sides involved. The win puts Schalke up to eighth place, three points behind sixth-placed SC Freiburg. Leverkusen, meanwhile, are now still just four points above FC Augsburg, who currently sit in sixteenth position and as such may be in line to face a relegation play-off.
