Heynckes honoured with DFB award

Jupp Heynckes has become the fifth German manager to be honoured with the DFB’s Lifetime Achievement Award. The 69-year-old received the award from DFB President Wolfgang Niersbach at a ceremony in Bonn. Günter Netzer made a speech praising Heynckes and listing some of his sporting feats. The award was first handed out in 2010 and previous recipients are Dettmar Cramer, Udo Lattek, Gero Bisanz and Otto Rehhagel.

"Both as a player and a coach, Jupp Heynckes helped to shape German football over the past decades. His exceptional results in the Bundesliga and abroad speak for themselves, but what really characterises him is the way he dealt with everything. He always carried himself impeccably," commented Niersbach.

Netzer: "Heynckes’ example will help to shape the new generation of coaches"

"His sporting career had many highs and lows, but he never gave up. When you take into consideration his desire to win, ability to lose and fighting spirit, he has had a remarkable career. I admire the work that he’s put in and the achievements that he’s made. His example will help to shape the new generation of coaches," added Günter Netzer.

Heynckes, both as a player and a manager, won everything that there is to win. He was part of the 1972 European Championship and 1974 World Cup winning Germany squad. During his time as a player at Borussia Mönchengladbach, the team triumphed in the 1975 UEFA Cup, were crowned Bundesliga champions on four occasions (1971, 1975, 1976 and 1977) and were victorious in the 1973 DFB Cup.

In his managerial career, he guided both Real Madrid (1998) and Bayern München (2013) to Champions League success. In total, he won three Bundesliga titles and the DFB Cup once. His last year in management was his most successful. In 2013, Bayern München completed the treble, Champions League, Bundesliga and DFB Cup, and Heynckes was honoured with the FIFA World Coach of the Year award.
