Hertha win in Bielefeld - Match abandoned in Osnabrück

Hertha BSC have navigated their way into the second round of the DFB Cup after a 2-0 win away at Arminia Bielefeld. The match between Vfl Osnabrück and RB Leipzig was postponed early, with the score at 1-0, due to crowd trouble. 1. FC Nürnberg went to extra time against VfL Aalen. Hertha required patience in their match at Bielefeld, not taking the lead until 73rd minute through Salomon Kalou, following a squared pass from substitute Nico Schulz. Vladimir Darida wrapped things up for the Berlin side in the 89th minute, in what had been a fairly uneventful match to that point. The Bundesliga side were in control throughout against the second division side and merely did enough to ensure their spot in the second-round draw. After reaching the semi final last season, the hosts from Bielefeld will be disappointed to exit this year’s competition at the first stage.

Match abandoned in Osnabrück

Meanwhile in Osnabrück, the referee Martin Petersen was hit by a lighter in the 71st minute that was thrown from the home section of the crowd, causing the match to be abandoned. Until then, the third-division side had enjoyed an electric starts: Halil Savran scored after 20 seconds to put them in the lead against the favourites to achieve promotion from the 2.Bundesligam who looked ineffective against the Osnabrück side. VfL striker Addy Menga had the chance to make it two, but the RB Leipzig keeper Fabio Coltori kept it out. It wasn’t until after the break that the hosts regained some control on the game, but they were unable to make their individual quality pay.
