Hennings secures a point for KSC in Nuremberg

Karlsruher SC recorded a 1-1 draw on the road against 1. FC Nürnberg on matchday 23 of the 2. Bundesliga, ensuring they remained five points clear over the side that dropped out of the top flight last season. Elsewhere, SV Sandhausen recorded another crucial victory in their bid to distance themselves from the relegation zone, as they secured a 2-0 home victory against VfR Aalen.

SV Darmstadt 98 and 1. FC Kaiserslautern (41 points each) both won on Friday and now hold a two-point advantage over fourth-placed KSC (39 points). Nürnberg remain in sixth with 34 points. Sandhausen have extended their gap to the relegation zone to eight points, as they now sit in 13th place with 28 points to their name. Aalen remain in 17th, two points adrift from safety.

Sandhausen on top in Swabian battle

As the best away team in the league, Karlsruhe looked confident in Nuremberg and kept FCN on the back foot. The hosts waited for opportunities to counterattack and were rewarded for that tactic early on: January signing Guido Burgstaller finished off a quick break with the outside off his boot to give Nürnberg a 1-0 lead after just four minutes.

KSC weren’t fazed though and continued to control the game for long spells, continuously getting down the right flank and one of those attacks produced the equaliser with just seconds to spare before the half-time whistle. Rouwen Hennings bagged his eighth goal of the campaign following a cross by Manuel Torres. Until then, Nürnberg's defence had looked organised, but they rediscovered their organisation in the second half. The hosts looked closer to scoring the next goal, but the game ultimately ended in a draw.

VfR Aalen, who were without a win in six going into this match, dictated the opening stages of their encounter with SV Sandhausen. But the visitors wasted several clear chances in the first half, allowing Sandhausen to find their rhythm shortly before the interval. The two teams cancelled each other out after the change of ends. That was until Aziz Bouhaddouz scored the opener out of nothgin in the 65th minute. Aalen's Sascha Mockenhaupt won’t have fond memories of the game, as he scored an own goal from roughly 20 yards to hand Sandhausen a 2-0 victory.
