HSV edge past Köln to book spot in last eight

Hamburger SV are the first team to progress to the last eight of the DFB Cup, having beaten 1. FC Köln 2-0 in one of just two all-Bundesliga clashes.

HSV, who had won their last three matches in front of a home crowd, and with former Köln defender Mergim Mavraj in the starting XI, got off to a flying start – with a little helping hand from FC keeper Thomas Kessler. The shot-stopper spilled a low strike from Gian-Luca Waldschmidt and Gideon Jung reacted quickest to slot home with his first professional goal (5’).

Having taken the lead, HSV sat back and allowed their opponents to take the initiative, with the aim of hitting back on the counter. Köln had the bulk of possession, but were overhasty and erratic in their build-up play. Waldschmidt almost added a second for the hosts in the 19th minute, firing just off target from 20 metres, while Simon Zoller forced a stretching save from René Adler in the 33rd minute with Köln’s first dangerous chance of the match.

Köln improve after break - until Wood substitution

The four-times cup winners from Köln came out for the second half with more energy and initiative, showing just why they have twice as many points as their opponents in the Bundesliga. Artjoms Rudnevs and Zoller could have levelled the match three times between them within the space of just one minute. But Hamburg stood strong and the game continued in a competitive fashion.

There were big chances at both ends, with Bobby Wood and Anthony Modeste coming close for their sides. But it was HSV who would grab the game’s decisive goal, with Wood firing in from the edge of the box after a fine one-two with Jung (76’). It was the third time Hamburg have beaten Köln in the cup, keeping their hopes of a first DFB Cup win since 1987 well and truly alive.
