1-0 against Northern Ireland: Germany finish top of the group

Group winners! The Germany national team have secured top spot in Group C at the European Championship in France, after a convincing 1-0 win in their third group match against Northern Ireland. Mario Gómez scored the only goal for national coach Joachim Löw’s team at the Parc des Princes in Paris. After numerous good chances on goal, a bigger victory was probably deserved.

Die Mannschaft were dominant from the start of their match against Northern Ireland and had numerous chances in the first half. In the 30th minute Mario Gomez put Germany into a well-deserved lead. The DFB team really impressed, playing some great football.

It took only eight minutes for Thomas Müller to show Northern Ireland’s goalkeeper, Michael McGovern, how dangerous he can be. However, his shot at the end of the first decent bit of combination play for Germany went straight down the middle. Chances from Mesut Özil (11th minute) and Mario Götze (12th minute) were also dealt with well by the Northern Ireland keeper.

But Joachim Löw’s team, which had been changed in two positions compared to the Poland match - Joshua Kimmich replaced Benedikt Höwedes at right back and Mario Gomez came in for Julian Draxler in the starting eleven – increased the tempo further and enjoyed some good periods of play.

Müller hits the bar

After two more chances for Müller (23rd & 27th minute) Gomez deservedly put the DFB team into the lead. The striker started the move, and Müller played a big part as well. After the opposition goalkeeper had played the ball out, he kept his cool to lay Gomez off, who netted to make it 1-0.

There were further opportunities to build on this lead, but Müller could only hit the bar after some great play from Götze (34th minute). Contrastingly, Manuel Neuer in the Germany goal was hardly tested, and had no trouble dealing with a harmless shot from distance and a Northern Ireland corner.

The Germany team immediately took control of the game again after the break. Kimmich triggered the first chance on goal from the right-hand side. The right back delicately played the ball into Götze’s path (52nd minute), who could not beat the quick reactions of McGovern. Just seconds later, the ball landed at Götze’s feet again – this time he put the put the ball narrowly past the left-hand post from five metres away.

Substitute Schweinsteiger becomes Germany EURO record breaker

Germany continued to play well, but failed to convert their many chances into another goal, as McGovern parried a shot from Sami Khedira from 20 Metres. The bold Northern Ireland team searched for the goal that would save them, but were met by a very strong defensive unit. Jonny Evans (61st minute) had the only chance for a long time, with a header from a corner kick.

In the 69th minute Bastian Schweinsteiger was brought on and therefore broke Germany’s record for the most EURO appearances, with 15 games under his belt. The Germany team then shifted down a gear, but were still in charge of play. Before the phinal phase of the match, Gómez (73rd minute), who was just one yard too slow, and Kimmich (76th minute) with a curler from the edge of the box, had good chances.

It continues for Germany on Sunday in Lille

Germany saw out the game without any trouble. Gómez (82/89) and Özil (83/90+1) could not convert a couple more good opportunities. The only cause for concern after a dominating performance was that defensive leader Boateng had to be taken off in the 76th minute, after picking up a knock. A diagnosis is still pending.

As winners of the group, Germany will face Slovakia, or third place in Group F (Hungary, Iceland, Portugal or Austria) in Lille on Sunday (18:00 CEST). Northern Ireland meanwhile, are hoping to move into the round of 16 as one of the four best third-place finishers. Wales or France would then be their opponents. Poland, as second in the group, face Switzerland in ST. Etienne on Saturday (15:00 CEST), after a 1-0 victory against Ukraine in the night’s other match. Ukraine had already been eliminated after the second round of matches.
