Goessling: “Everyone wants to play at Wembley”

Leno Goeßling has fond memories of Wembley stadium. The VfL Wolfsburg midfielder, who will take on England on Sunday (16:00 CET) with Germany Women’s national team at the legendary stadium, was a spectator at the 2013 Champions League final between FC Bayern and Borussia Dortmund.

Several days earlier, Goeßling had won her first Champions League trophy with VfL Wolfsburg, also in London. Traditionally, the women’s finalists are invited to the same city as the men’s. “The stadium, the atmosphere, the ambience – it was impressive,” remembers Goeßling. “It’s super cool that we will get to play there.”

“England are a tough opponent”

Germany Women’s national team have been preparing for their final match of the year since Tuesday in Kaiserau. On Friday, they will fly to London and can expect an outstanding atmosphere as 55,000 spectators will attend the game.

The game is not only heavily anticipated because of the atmosphere though. The opponents’ quality is also a factor, as a tough game is expected. “England are a tough opponent,” said Lena Goeßling. “These encounters are important in order to grow as a team.”

Continue the upward trend

An average performance in the 2-0 defeat against France in Offenbach was followed up by an improved display in the 2-1 victory against Sweden. The aim now is to continue that upward trend. “We want to improve on the things that didn’t go so well in the past two games” explains Goeßling. “Our plan is to play as a compact unit. Accuracy in our final passing has to improve and obviously we want to end the year with a win.”

A year that started by winning the Algarve Cup in March and featured the successful qualification for the 2015 World Cup in Canada is about to come to a close. A true highlight awaits them at the end. Lena Goeßling explains: “Everyone wants to play at Wembley.”
