Goalless Franconian derby

In a hardly fought game local rivals 1. FC Nürnberg a SpVgg Greuther Fürth played out a 0-0 draw in their final game before Christmas. The other second-division game of the day saw FC St. Pauli pick up a 3-1 win over VfR Aalen.

René Weiler’s side went into the game having won four of their last five games and wanted to avenge the 5-1 defeat against their rivals earlier in the season. However, those expecting attacking fireworks were disappointed as despite uncertainties amongst the Fürth backline, the hosts struggled to create chances in what turning out to be a less than remarkable derby match.

The second half exploded into life when the visitors, who were without a win in six and a goal in four going into the game, were reduced to ten men thanks to Stephan Schröck’s second yellow card of the game. As the game progressed Nürnberg attempted to increase the pressure on the visitors, but they were unable to make the most of the numerical advantage and the game finished goalless. Nürnberg remain in eighth with 27 points, Fürth are 11th and have 23 points.

St. Pauli move off the bottom

New coach Ewald Lienen’s tenure couldn’t have got off to a better start. St. Pauli’s run of and form ended with a 3-1 win over VfR Aalen, which saw them move off the bottom of the table. John Verhoek gave them the lead after 35 minutes and they could have been ahead even earlier had Dennis Daube’s effort not rebounded off the post to safety.

The second half started perfectly for the hosts when Aalen’s Oliver Barth turned a corner into his own net. Lennart Thy grabbed a third for St. Pauli with nine minutes left on the clock and although Fabio Kaufmann got one back for the visitors two minutes later, it was nothing more than a consolation goal. It was St. Pauli’s first home win since 4th October and they are now just one point and two places behind Aalen. The Hamburg based side are in 17th with 16 points; Aalen in 15th with 17.
