Gladbach win, S04 and Hoffenheim can't be separated

In the first of Bundesliga two games on Sunday, Borussia Mönchengladbach won away from home against FC Ingolstadt (2-0), while Schalke 04 and Hoffenheim drew 1-1 at the Vetlins Arena in the late kick-off.

Dieter Hecking’s men are now within six points of sixth-place Eintracht Frankfurt. The effect of the new coach is clear to see, as the Foals are now even the best-performing team of the second half of the campaign so far. Meanwhile, their opponents Ingolstadt missed the chance to overtake Hamburger SV in in the relegation places.

The first half ended goalless, with the hosts having chances to take the lead. Their best opportunity came through Dario Lezcano, but his effort was blocked by Borussia defender Jannik Vestergaard in the 30th minute. After the break, Inglostadt, the team with the worst home record in the league this season, still couldn’t find a way past the Gladbach defence, but Lars Stindl inspired his team to victory. The Gladbach captain picked up from where he left off in the Europa League in midweek, scoring the opener in the 60th minute. André Hahn made the three points secure with a goal in stoppage time, after countering from a terrific Yann Sommer save.

Rudy heads in a late Hoffe equaliser

Schalke 04's hopes of finishing in the European places have been dealt a disappointing blow after they drew 1-1 with 1899 Hoffenheim at home. The draw means the Royal Blues currently lie eight points adrift of the European qualification spots, while Julian Nagelsmann’s side are in fourth. If Hoffe remain in this position, it would be the first time the club has ever qualified for the Champions League preliminary rounds.

Alessandro Schöpf put the hosts into the lead with just five minutes gone - his seventh goal of the season. The strike put the Austrian at the top of the Royal Blues’ scoring charts. After going behind, the visitors put S04 under pressure with some quick passing play. In the 26th minute, Steven Zuber missed the target narrowly. However, Schalke’s defence stood firm and organised and when Kerem Demirbay did breach it, goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann was in place to save his side (36’). In the second half, the Royal Blues rediscovered their attacking threat and troubled opposition ‘keeper Oliver Bauman a few times. The equaliser came with just over ten minutes to play, when Germany international Sebastian Rudy headed in a Zuber cross from close range.
