Germany victorious in EURO 2016 dress rehearsal

The Germany national team won their final friendly ahead of EURO 2016 after an own goal and Thomas Müller strike secured a 2-0 victory for the World Cup winners. It was the 250th win on home soil Die Mannschaft in what was the 300th match.

Joachim Löw’s side started the game with a high tempo in the packed out Veltins-Arena and were almost rewarded in the opening minute when Julian Draxler had the ball in the back of the net. However, Swedish referee Martin Strömbergsson adjudged the Wolfsburg attacker to have been offside when Mario Götze played the ball through.

Two big chances before Hungary find their feet

The visitors, who are managed by German duo Bernd Storck and Andreas Möller, struggled to make it out of their own half in the opening stages. Müller tested Gabor Kiraly from long range in the tenth minute, forcing a stretching save from the Hungarian keeper. Shortly afterwards, Antonio Rüdiger missed an opportunity to fire Germany ahead, but headed wide from inside the six-yard box. Hungary finally managed to push forward in the 13th minute, when Balasz Dszuszdszak tested Manuel Neuer from distance.

The world champions continued their dominance, but were not immune to the Hungarian attack; Rüdiger denying Adam Szalai the opening goal midway through the first half. Finally, in the 39th minute, Germany were rewarded with the game’s opening goal: Jonas Hector fired ball low across the box for Götze, but defender Adam Lang got the final touch and deflected the ball into his own net.

Gomez heads, Müller finishes rebound

At the break, Emre Can and Mario Gomez came on for Hector and Sami Khedira, with the former having a hand in Germany’s second in the 63rd minute. The veteran striker headed Jerome Boateng’s cross towards goal and Müller followed up to tap in on the rebound.

With just over 20 minutes to go, captain Bastian Schweinsteiger celebrated his long-awaited comeback after months on the sidelines. Leroy Sané also made an appearance, replacing goalscorers Müller. Löw also brought on Schürrle and birthday boy Lukas Podolski towards the end of the half.
