Germany to face Australia, Chile and African Champions at Confederations Cup

The German national team will play against South America Champions Chile, Asia’s Champions Australia and the as yet unknown African Champions at the 2017 Confederations Cup in Russia. The other group consists of hosts Russia, European Champions Portugal, CONCACAF winners Mexico and Oceania’s Champions New Zealand.

This was determined on Saturday at the draw in Kazan conducted by former Russian international Sergej Semjak and the two-time Olympic gold medallist Jelena Issinbajewa. Germany coach Joachim Löw attended the event together with team manager Oliver Bierhoff and deputy DFB General Secretary Ralf Köttker.

Germany to play in Kazan and Sochi

The World Champions will play their first game on June 19th in Kazan against Australia, before facing Chile on June 22nd at the same venue, rounding off their group stage campaign is a match with Africa’s Champions in Sochi on June 25th. The semi-finals take place on June 28th and 29th in Kazan and Sochi, with the final being staged in St. Petersburg on July 2nd.

This will be the tenth edition of the Confederations Cup, and Germany are only taking part for a third time. In 1999 the reigning European Champions did not make it out of their group. In 2005, while hosting the tournament, they lost 3-2 to Brazil in the semi-final but managed to secure a 4-3 win over Mexico in the game for third place. In 1997 and 2003 Germany was qualified, but declined to take part in the tournament.
