Germany sign off with win at Wembley

Victory at Wembley: The Germany Women’s national team won their final game of the calendar year 3-0 against England in London. Alex Scott (own goal) and Celia Sasic handed manager Silvia Neid’s side an early 2-0 lead. Sasic struck again on the stroke of half time with her second to ensure a fine victory for Germany.

It was Germany’s second victory in their third game after qualifying for the World Cup in Canada (6th June – 5th July 2015). They previously lost 2-0 to France before winning 2-1 in Sweden.

Mexican wave inside Wembley

Germany got off to a terrific start. Scott diverted a header into her own net after an aerial duel with Laudehr following a corner, before Sasic netting soon after with just the second chance of the game. The hosts created a fantastic atmosphere inside of the famous Wembley Stadium in spite of being two goals down. The 55,000 spectators produced the Mexican wave for the first time after just thirty minutes. Sasic completed her brace and handed Germany a 3-0 advantage shortly before the half-time whistle.

Neid then made two changes at the interval: Dzsenifer Marozsán, Luisa Wensing and Anja Mittag came on in place of Melanie Behringer, Tabea Kemme and Melanie Leupolz. The Germans continued to dictate the game with the numerous changes in personnel. England meanwhile, found it hard to get into the visitors’ box.

Sasic misses chance for hat-trick

And it was Germany who continued to enjoy the better chances: Sasic was denied by England goalkeeper Karen Bardsley with a header. Pauline Bremer, who was subbed on for Laudher, should have increased the advantage from six yards out with a header. But the best chance in the closing stages fell to England: Jill Scott only found the side-netting though.

Neid deployed the side in a tried and tested 4-2-3-1 formation. Kemme, Annike Krahn, Josephine Henning and Jennifer Cramer made up the four-woman defence. Lena Goeßling and Melanie Behringer started in defensive midfield, with Leupolz, Alexandrea Popp and Laudehr in attack, and Sasic the lone striker.
