The Germany national team are into the Confederations Cup final for the first time. Joachim Löw’s side swept aside Mexico 4-1 in Sochi to reach Sunday’s final showdown with Chile (20:00 CEST). Leon Goretzka (6’, 8’) gave Germany an early lead, before Timo Werner added a third on the hour mark. Marco Fabián pulled one back for Mexico in the 89th minute, before Amin Younes made it four in injury time.
The world champions flew out of the blocks, leaving the Mexicans camped inside their own half. Löw’s side attacked with intent and were soon rewarded when Benjamin Henrichs, on his starting debut, found Leon Goretzka inside the box with a perfect pass that allowed the Schalke man to finish first time into the bottom corner. Just two minutes later, Goretzka was on the score sheet again after Werner’s clever through ball.
Ter Stegen protects the lead
Mexico were rattled but slowly found their way back into the game, enjoying phases of possession. But it was Germany who continued to create the most chances – Werner firing too close to the goalkeeper Ochoa in the 19th minute. Chicharito & Co. impressed in their build-up play, but struggled to penetrate the 18-yard box.
Marc-André ter Stegen was called upon for the first time in the 33rd minute, when Giovani dos Santos was teed up expertly by Chicharito, but was unable to beat the Germany shot stopper. At the other end, the Mexicans passed up on another chance for a third. Chicharito attempted to lob ter Stegen, but saw his effort land on top of the goal.
Werner bags his third of the tournament
Mexico took control of the match at the start of the second half and had a good chance through Raúl Jímenez, though ter Stegen was superior once again. But punctually on the hour mark, Werner dashed Mexico’s hopes of a comeback when Julian Draxler and Jonas Hector linked up cleverly to provide the RB Leipzig forward with the simplest of finishes into an empty net.
Younes wraps up the win
Mexico refused to give up, with substitute Marco Fabián hitting the outside netting, before Miguel Layún fired an attempt from range. The first time ter Stegen was truly beaten, by Jímenez’s 75th minute header, he was saved by the crossbar.
Rafael Marquéz forced a sensational reflex save from a corner with six minutes left to play, before Fabián finally beat the German keeper from 25 yards in the final minute. Younes found a response deep into injury time to complete the 4-1 victory.
