Germany close to semis after 1-1 Chile draw

World Cup winners Germany have one foot in the semi-finals of the Confederations Cup in Russia following a 1-1 against Chile in Kazan. Just a draw against Cameroon in Sochi on Sunday (17:00) would be enough to see Die Mannschaft into the last four. Lars Stindl scored his second international goal shortly before half time to cancel out Alexis Sanchez’s sixth minute opener.

The Chilean’s turned up the pressure from the get go, allowing Germany few opportunities to attack. The intense pressing paid off when Shkodran Mustafi’s pass was intercepted by FC Bayern München midfielder Arturo Vidal, who then fed Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez to slot home past Marc-André ter Stegen for the game’s opener.

Captain Draxler sparks comeback

Moments later, Germany had their first chance when captain Julian Draxler made a dribbling run before firing a long-distance shot just off target. Joachim Löw’s side slowly edged their way back into the game, with Lars Stindl having the next close chance, attacking Matthias Ginter’s cross before Joshua Kimmich also headed just wide of the Chilean goal.

Chile almost doubled their lead in the 20th minute, when Eduardo Vargas’ curling shot from the edge of the box rattled the underside of the crossbar. Germany struggled to create an abundance of chances against an opposition playing so high up the pitch.

Stindl equalises before the break

The much-needed equaliser came shortly before the half-time whistle following a delightful piece of build.-up play. Emre Can charged through the middle before feeding Jonas Hector down the left wing. The 1. FC Köln defender delivered a low cross into the box, where Borussia Mönchengladbach captain Lars Stindl was waiting to poke home. ter Stegen was called into action on the stroke of half time, when he denied Sanchez a second goal for himself and Chile.

Sanchez came close once again in the second half, but his direct free kick was just slightly too high. As the game progressed, Chile attacked less and less, but Germany were unable to take advantage and find the winning goal.
