EURO 2016: Özil named "Player of the Tournament"

At EURO 2016, Mesut Özil did not just present himself as an intelligent offensive player. The 27-year-old also impressed with his high work-rate and strong challenges in defence. With 570 minutes under his belt, the Arsenal player was among the five ever-presents in Joachim Löw’s team. As well as Manuel Neuer, Jonas Hector, Toni Kroos and Thomas Müller the world champion completed every minute of every game.

One goal, one assist, 91 percent passing accuracy in 420 attempts, 26 runs into the danger area, 53 passes in the attacking third and 48 chances created – Özil’s impressive figures from the European Championship. EURO 2016 did indeed come to an end for Germany in the semi-final, but the strong impression that Özil and Co. made, left its mark.

Özil ahead of Boateng and Kroos

Looking back, Mesut Özil’s performance must have left the biggest impression on the fans, because in the vote for the “Player of EURO 2016”, the midfielder finished top with 25.2 percent, ahead of Jerome Boateng on 23.1 percent and Toni Kroos on 18.9 percent. Özil had already beaten his teammates to being named Man of the Match against France, and he also won the title of “German Player of the Year 2015”.

In total, 25,200 fans took part in the vote for “Player of the Tournament”. The Fan Club Nationalmannschaft powered by Coca-Cola and DFB.de would like to thank all users for taking part.
