Eintracht Frankfurt vs. Borussia Dortmund - A DFB Pokal history

A cup final between Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt is something we have never seen before, meaning this Saturday’s final in Berlin will be somewhat of a collector’s item. The pair have however met four times in the competition, and here is our look back at those meetings.

February 4 1969: Eintracht Frankfurt 6-2 Borussia Dortmund

Back in the 60s the Pokal started in conjunction with the calendar year, and so this was actually a first round match in February. Despite being 16th in the league, Eintracht dismissed the favourites. The man of the hour on that day was Hermann-Dier Bellut, who scored three goals in addition to a brace from Jürgen Grabowski and Bernd Nickel. Dortmund replied through Siggi Held and Werner Weist but they were mere consolations.

April 28 1979: Borussia Dortmund 1-3 Eintracht Frankfurt

This second round tie also went the way of Frankfurt, but this time in Dortmund. Borussia took the lead after Lothar Huber scored from the spot. Rudi Elsener though turned the tie on its head after the break before Wolfgang Kraus made the game safe. Winning manager Freidel Rausch said after the game: “We were poor from a footballing perspective today. I was not thrilled at half-time and I tore them a few strips at half time.” The Rhein club went on to reach the semi-finals.

October 31 2007: Borussia Dortmund 2-1 Eintracht Frankfurt

It took until round 2 in 2007/2008 for Dortmund to get their first win over Frankfurt in the Pokal. 45,000 people were in the Westfalenstadion to watch Frankfurt take an early lead through Ioannis Amanatidis. It stayed that way until the break before Markus Brzenska equalised immediately after the restart. Mladen Petric struck the winner just after the hour as Dortmund began their route to the final that season. The pair played again ten day later in the league and in a curious twist it was Amanatidis who again opened the scoring for Frankfurt, only for Dortmund to fight back again and earn a 1-1 draw.

February 11 2014: Eintracht Frankfurt 0-1 Borussia Dortmund

Just as they had done first time round some 35 years previously the sides met on a cold Tuesday night in February. Frankfurt were languishing in 12th in the league while Dortmund were third, way out of reach of pacesetting Bayern. Jürgen Klopp’s Dortmund saw their chance of silverware loom into view in the cup with just two games between them and Berlin. An even contest before the break saw neither side create a clear cut chance. Sebastian Rode was left to rue two guilt-edged chances as Dortmund snatched the tie late on thanks to a header from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. Klopp and his yellow army once more used a win over Frankfurt as a springboard to reach the final, where they were beaten by Bayern. The two sides met again in the Bundesliga four days later, with Dortmund running out comfortable 4-0 winners. This time around in 2016/17, both teams will be playing their final competitive match of the season.
