"Difficult decisions": Kramer names final squad for European U19 Championship

At the end of the training camp in Grassau, DFB boss Frank Kramer has named his final squad for the European U19 Championship in Georgia (2nd-15th July). He had to cut down his original 23-man squad by five players. Goalkeeper Finn Gilbert Dahmen (Mainz 05) as well as Maxime Awoudja (Bayern München), Patrick Sontheimer (Greuther Fürth), Christian Stark (Hamburger SV) and Johannes Bender (1899 Hoffenheim) will not be traveling to the Black Sea, but will be on standby along with eight other players.

“We deliberately chose to take 23 players to the training camp to keep the competition for places and pressure high,” said Kramer. “Everyone was aware that five players involved would not be selected to go to the European Championship. The team worked incredibly hard and every player fought for their place on the plane. They were difficult decisions to make, but we took lots of different factors into consideration when finalising our squad.”

In Georgia, the German team will be targeting the country’s fourth European Championship title in this age group after successes in 1981, 2008 and 2014. Their campaign gets under way on 3rd July (18:00 CEST) against the Netherlands. They then face Bulgaria on 6th July (18:00 CEST) before their final Group B game pits them against England on 9th July (18:00 CEST). The top two teams from each group will progress to the semi-finals, before the final takes place in Tbilisi on 15th July (18:00 CEST).

Goalkeepers: Markus Schubert (Dynamo Dresden), Eike Bansen (Borussia Dortmund)
