Captain Schweinsteiger: "Fully on track"

Preparations for the European Championship in France (10th June – 10th July) have begun: The German national team arrived at their training camp in Ascona on Tuesday. They’ll face Slovakia on Sunday (17:45 CEST) in their penultimate friendly before the first group game against Ukraine on 12th June. Manager Joachim Löw and captain Bastian Schweinsteiger took part in the first press conference in Ticino and discussed the planned preparations and the captain’s injury situation.

Bastian Schweinsteiger on...

...his knee injury: I’m communicating lots with the medical team and have completed all of the tasks set. The MRI that Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt recently carried out looks good. I am confident but now need to work hard to catch up in training. So far I’m fully on track.

...his role in the squad: I’ve had responsibilities both on and off the pitch in recent years. We have a very good team here with lots of experience at tournaments. I will try to pass on my experience to the younger players. This includes making them aware and clear about the German values.

...Germany’s chances at the tournament: We must not rest on our past successes because as World Champions the task is even trickier. Other teams are now even more motivated to play against Germany. It won’t be easy but we, as a team and the coaching staff, are confident.

Joachim Löw on...

…the training camp in Ascona: The conditions are ideal; they couldn’t be any better.

…the team situation: We have lots of different groups. The Bundesliga season only finished for some players ten days ago, while others played in the DFB Cup final a few days ago. Lots of players are only able to train individually and are still not fully recovered and ready to go again. Players like Lukas Podolski and Toni Kroos still have matches with their respective clubs.

…central defender Hummels: He has a slightly pulled calf after the DFB Cup final but I see no danger of him missing the tournament. We will have to take it day by day though.

…the squad for the friendly against Slovakia: I can’t specifically say today who will and who won't be involved on Sunday. Any players carrying an injury or whom it would be a risk to play won’t take part because I’m not taking any chances.
