Bayern host Schalke in third cup game at home this season

FC Schalke 04 have fond memories of their most recent cup clash at record champions Bayern München. The Royal Blues came out on top in the 2011 semi-final after Spanish striker Raúl’s goal gave his side a 1-0 victory. Schalke then went on to lift the trophy at the Olympic stadium in Berlin. Almost six years to the day, Markus Weinzierl’s men must now try to repeat that success on Wednesday at 20:45 CET.

But achieving that same feat will be far from easy. Bayern are yet to be defeated at home in all competitions this season. The match at the Allianz Arena will be the eleventh meeting between the two sides in the cup. The history certainly favours Ancelotti’s men, with Bayern winning seven of those clashes and losing just two. This fixture did end in a draw back in 1984 in the semi-final but a replay a few days later turned the tie in Bayern’s favour.

This quarter-final will be the third cup home game of the season for the Bavarian club. The 18-time winners eased past FC Augsburg 3-1 and overcame a stern challenge from VfL Wolfsburg to win 1-0 earlier in this year’s competition. Schalke, four-time winners, have only faced lower-tier sides in Germany so far in the tournament. The Royal Blues put in a gutsy performance at the Allianz Arena in January to earn a very respectable 1-1 draw.
