Bayern breeze past Schalke into semi-finals

Record holders FC Bayern München moved into the semi-final of the DFB Cup for an eighth successive season after a comfortable 3-0 win over FC Schalke on Wednesday evening. Robert Lewandowksi added his 29th and 30th goals of the season either side of a Thiago Alcantara header, as Bayern raced to a three-goal lead within 29 minutes to effectively put the tie to bed.

The hosts, who made three changes to the side that thrashed Hamburger SV 8-0 on Saturday, including Philipp Lahm and Thomas Müller, flew out the blocks to go in front within three minutes. Franck Ribéry, who came in to the side in place of Douglas Costa, capitalised on a Benedikt Höwedes mistake before feeding Lewandowski, who beat goalkeeper Ralf Fährmann with a deft chip.

Lewandowski hits 30 for the season

Bayern kept up the intensity in search of a second goal, as Schalke struggled to win possession. Both Ribéry and Arjen Robben had chances to double the lead within ten minutes, before Lewandowski turned provider to assist Thiago for his sixth goal of the season.

Schalke were unable to find a response, with Leon Goretzka’s long-range effort the only notable chance of the night for the Royal Blues. The evening went from bad to worse for the visitors when Bayern loanee Holger Badstuber was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 77th minute.
