Bayern beat Bochum 3-0 to make semis

FC Bayern have completed the line-up for the DFB Cup semi-finals. The record German champions have joined Hertha Berlin, Werder Bremen and Borussia Dortmund in the final four after beating VfL Bochum 3-0. Robert Lewandowski put FCB on course for the win in the 39th minute, but a missed penalty from Thomas Müller followed shortly before the break, after Jan Simunek was sent off for a foul on Arjen Robben in the box. Bayern were able to comfortably see off ten-man Bochum in the end, with Thiago and Lewandowski adding goals two and three in the second 45.

The Munich side struggled early on in front of 28,000 at the sold-out Rewirpower-Stadion, and could easily have gone behind. Bochum produced a fast counterattack in the eighth minute that saw Simon Terodde in behind the defence, but he pulled his shot wide of the target. Holger Badstuber also had to make a good block moments later to once again deny Terodde.

Lewandowski scores, Simunek off

Bayern may have been enjoying more of the possession, but there was little to see from them in front of goal. Their first real effort didn’t arrive until the 34th minute through Arjen Robben, but it was a comfortable save for Marcel Riemann. Five minutes later though, Robert Lewandowski showed that he only needs one chance to make a difference. After a neat one-two with Müller, the Pole fired low in off the post to open the scoring. Bochum could have gone into the break further behind after Simunek was sent off for a professional foul in the area, but Thomas Müller saw his penalty well saved by the VfL keeper.

Despite being a man down, Bochum continued to put up a good fight in the second half. Bayern tried to stretch the play and often attacked down the wing with Douglas Costa. One of his deliveries should have been put away by Robben, but he somehow managed to fire into the grateful arms of Riemann when it seemed easier to score. The second goal soon followed though, as Müller’s pull back found the run of Thiago, and he fired home to make it 2-0 after 61 minutes.

Bochum’s hopes of a comeback were over with that goal and Bayern comfortably saw out the closing stages with a few chances to add to the scoreline. Müller and Costa came close, but it was a last-minute strike from Robert Lewandowski that finally made it 3-0 to the record champions to confirm their place in the semi-finals for a seventh consecutive season.
