Bavarian derby beckons

Hamburger SV vs. Borussia Mönchengladbach

Fret not, Bundesliga fans – there is plenty to come before the end of matchday 21. After a busy Saturday which saw wins for Borussia Dortmund, VfB Stuttgart, Bayer Leverkusen and Wolfsburg, the action is far from over. The penultimate match of the weekend sees Schubert’s Borussia Mönchengladbach, back on track after a morale-boosting 5-1 win over Werder Bremen last weekend, take on Hamburger SV, who have slipped to 13th position in the seemingly ever-changing table. HSV are currently enduring their second-longest winless streak under boss Bruno Labbadia (6 games), and face a team that have lost just once in their last six Bundesliga games in the Volksparkstadion. A brief look at the form table would suggest that Gladbach are on the verge going on a long winning streak, as they tend to put together good runs after a string of poor results. With 75% of goals against HSV this season coming in the second half, it may well be, as is always the case, a game of two halves. Regardless, the stakes are high with a big-enough win allowing Gladbach to jump into the Champions League play-off spot. Kick-off: Sunday, 15:30 CET.

FC Augsburg vs. Bayern München

Later that day, league leaders Bayern München will make the short journey north to face FC Augsburg in the Bavarian derby. With Dortmund clinching a 1-0 win today, the title race could yet take an interesting turn if Augsburg are able to frustrate the record champions. Ominously for the men from Munich, FCA, alongside Gladbach, are the only team to have beaten Guardiola’s Bayern more than once. With that said, Weinzierl’s FCA are winless in 2016 and face a side that has not tasted defeat since matchday 15. Down in 15th position, it would be a crucial three points for the side that have a clash against Liverpool to look forward to on Thursday. Though a bit of a long shot, FCA may take confidence from the fact that they have scored five goals from distance this season. No matter how the goals are scored, it promises to be a real fight from the first to the last minute. Kick-off: Sunday, 17:30 CET.
